Poor Little Toys...

Oscar is on a chewing rampage lately! He has destroyed three or four toys in the last couple of days alone. Look at poor little Wubba bear - he's missing an ear!

Oscar also ate both ears off of another Kong Wubba toy, and chewed a thick, knotted rope bone right in half. We've been trying to take him on more walks and have played marathon fetch games with him, but I guess he's just in a high-energy phase right now. We're planning on bringing him to another day camp session next week, and hopefully the dog parks will be less of a melty mess (or a frozen tundra, depending on the day) and we can go back soon.

I was thinking of different ways to stuff his toys with things that will keep him busy at times when we need a break and just need him to be quiet and on his own for a few minutes. We'll be feeding him more of his kibble mixed with cottage cheese and frozen in a bigger Kong. Then there's the trusty frozen peanut butter in a Kong (or other similar stuffable toys), and we have also started freezing yogurt in Kongs. I read on a blog (sorry, I can't remember which one!) about putting a piece of banana in a Kong and freezing that. I was thinking that I might take it up a notch and fill the remaining space around the banana with yogurt and freezing that so it's even harder for him to get the banana out - and I can try that with a carrot too.

Any other good ideas out there for keeping a dedicated chewer busy? It's like a full-time job!

Hi Y'all,

My Human keeps my toys away from me unless she can play with me 'cause I am a HARD chewer. I've even partially destroyed the black Kong.

Nyla bones were the only thing she could trust to leave me with and those had to be replaced regularly 'cause I frayed them in no time.

Fortunately, I've outgrown most of the chewing, but I still only get a toy when she can me with me.

Y'all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog

I can leave Tibby with certain soft toys and she is fine, but with others.....they end up having missing chunks. I keep all the 'tasty' ones put away unless we are playing together.
Things that keep Tibby busy - kongs, her food ball, everlasting treat ball (spendy, but worth it), bully sticks (lots a bully sticks) and antlers.
During the winter we did lots of seeking games - I would hide food around a room and then she would look for it. While she was searching I could get stuff done without my puppy helper :)

You could try getting one of those bone marrows from a pet shop like these ones: http://www.redbarninc.com/images/product/large/26.gif. Stuff them with peanut butter & other good stuff. You could also get him some antler chews. I heard they are good & they last a long time!

Tell me about it! Beauford can destroy ANYTHING! and works on a toy until we 1. take it away or 2. it's destroyed. It's amazing!

We're sorry but we don't have any suggestions. We only like to chew soft things and it normally takes a long time to get an ear off.

We have heard of our friends with a lab doing what you suggested with the frozen yogurt and banana.

Good luck!

I've heard about those bone marrows! I haven't seen any in the pet stores where we live...maybe I'd have to order them online. We did get him a couple of small antler pieces. He does like to chew them every once in a while, but he is only mildly interested in them unfortunately, because they are definitely long-lasting. I haven't thought about hide and seek though - that might be fun! Hawk - I'm impressed that you can chew through a black Kong! Wow. Thanks for your comments, everyone!

I rubbed peanut butter onto Tibby's antler. It got into all the grooves and she loves it now.
